We are alone, absolutely alone on this chance planet;
amid all the forms of life that surround us, not one,
excepting the dog, has made an alliance with us.
Maurice Maeterlinck 1862 - 1949

Belgian poet and Symbolist dramatist

Dogs give their human companions unconditional love and are always
there with an encouraging wag of the tail when they are needed.
The dog is indeed a very special animal.
Dorothy Hinshaw Patent

My dog does have his failings, of course. He's afraid of firecrackers and
hides in the clothes closet whenever we run the vacuum cleaner,
but unlike me he's not afraid of what other people think of him
or anxious about his public image.
Gary Kowalski
A paster from Oklahoma who has written several books
on animals, including 'The Souls of Animals'

If I have any beliefs about immortality, it is that certain dogs
I have known will go to heaven, and very, very few persons.
James Grover Thurber 1894 - 1961

He seemed neither old nor young. His strength lay in his eyes.
They looked as old as the hills, and as young and as wild.
I never tired looking into them.

I like them all - pointers, setters, retrievers, spaniels - what have you.
I've had good ones and bad of several kinds. Most of the bad
ones were my fault and most of the good ones would have
been good under any circumstances.

a city man's wit and sophistication

When the Man waked up he said,
'What is Wild Dog doing here?'
And the Woman said,
'His name is not Wild Dog anymore,
But the First Friend,
because he will be our friend
For always and always and always'.
Rudyard Kipling 1838 - 1914
His views on Empire are now totally out of date, but he
remains one of the great English literary figures

Most people have heard the remarkable example of devotion involving
a Skye terrier dog who worked for a Scottish shepherd named
Old Jock. In 1858, the day after Jock was buried (with almost
nobody present to mourn him except for his shaggy dog) in
the churchyard at Greyfriars Abbey in Edinburgh, Bobby
was found asleep on his master's grave, where he
continued to sleep every night for fourteen years.
